Born in New York City and raised most of her life in Brooklyn, Charulata has always had a solid foundation in media arts and creative writing. Inspired by the diverse culture in which she was raised, her work has become an expression and celebration of differences.

Starting out in the N.Y.C. independent film scene after graduating high school, Charulata began working various jobs in the industry. She did everything from scaling film equipment up city buildings, to lighting, production assisting or just finding a specific brand of orange juice for the talent. It wasn’t until college that she discovered her passion for photography. Her specialty is working alternative processes, both traditional and digital. Using materials such as tiles, wood, canvas and metal in combination with her images, her affinity for alternative processes has become an integral exploration of her fine art work.

Outside of her own projects, she continues to write, as well as work with filmmakers. Charulata has also taught photography and art classes to kids and adults of all ages. For over 5 years she worked one-on-one with the International Center of Photography’s Teen Academy, providing additional training in traditional black and white photography and portfolio development. She has also taught undergraduate creative photography.

With a B.A. in Journalism and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, Charulata is currently completeing her M.F.A. in Photography.
