A note from the Dramaturg: Henry VI Part II holds formative place in Shakespeare's canon for two reasons. First, it can claim several possible (though contested) firsts: Shakespeare's first history play, his first tragedy, and even possibly his first play ever. Second, regardless of where and when it lands in his early chronology, we can see the little experiments Shakespeare is playing with that he will continue to use throughout his oeuvre. He dabbles with the theatrical devices like omnipotent spirits, digs in to write metaphor drenched soliloquies, and seriously questions history on what makes it theatrical. A play like Henry VI Part II shows why Shakespeare was undoubtedly so promising early on. The success of this play compelled him to write parts I and III and complete this history tetralogy with Richard III.
